It's more than worthy of a donation. It combines comics, animation, and an epic storyline into a hard to resist cereal bowl of entertainment.

I was playing around with an I-touch and was looking at the wip version of this image through a small screen, and it looked finished. Granted, I did add more fog and cleaned up the edges a little, but this image was done long before I was satisfied. I should zoom out more often than I zoom in.

Not quite finished...I still have adjusting to do to the overall color balance of the image, but it's getting close. It's a little past "the ugly stage" where you really have no clue what you are doing and your stumbling around for the right color combos and lighting but it's coming together. I have just fully recovered from a vicious attack of the flu virus. If you start to have an intense searing pain in your lower ribs like someone stuffed an angry ant hill in your gullet, then you have my sympathies!

Kingdm Hearts is Done

Once I got my rear end in the computer chair it didn't take long to paint out this commission. All the design work was completed before hand by a handful of Disney artist's that are much more talented than myself, so special thanks to them. I did learn quite a bit from this piece as I don't normally do full digital paintings. I was trying to use warm and cool colors as a solid base for all the design and rendering. I would place a warm and cool grad on top of a generic multiply shadow layer. I merged all the layers together, including the base local color layer, and then concentrated on painting form and making objects turn in space. All of this becomes much easier when you have a nice Kingdom Hearts reference book to go from.

Yoda and Swamp Creature

I've always wanted to draw Yoda levitating a giant beast. My problem is that the beast is never big enough. If I had my way Yoda would be a spec and the monster would take up most of the page. But the drawing is about Yoda, so you need something that fans can recognize. I had to redraw the beast several times just to get him to 1) fit on the sheet of paper, and 2) correlate with Yoda's small stature and environment. I'll admit that I always make too many marks when drawing. You know a seasoned veteran illustrator when they can draw something like this in less time and with fewer marks that relay more information than my scratches and squiggles ever could. I hope to cover a lot of the background drawing with color/digital paint. I have been studying Tom Scholes work for a while, so I might try something along those lines. He is amazing! I've mentioned on my DA site that this drawing is for my son who loves Star Wars. He thought the creature is the swamp monster that swallowed R2 and spat him out, something I hadn't thought of while drawing it. He has already requested it be plastered to his wall and I am more than happy to accommodate him.

Kingdon Hearts Prelim

This is a in-progress Kingdom Hearts commission I'm working on. I still have to add a few more elements but it seems to be panning out rather well. I never thought I would have so much fun drawing Disney characters. As long as they're carrying melee weapons, I'm interested. Goofy's next!

Yoda vs Monster t-nails

I really wanted to draw Yoda levitating a giant wild boar near his home in Degoba, but it really didn't make sense. So, I tried another thumbnail and got this salamander like creature instead. I liked the composition better, but I really wanted a more bizarre and frightening creature. Thus the Boarmander was born and can be seen at the top of the three images. I'll see if I can't sneak Yoda's hut into the back ground in the final version. I made sure my four year old son had the final say. He loves star wars.

I really find it frustrating when a sketch or layout ends up looking better than the final product and I must admit that this is the case. The layout has more attitude and better drawing, hands down. My next project will hopefully be more true to my layout sketches and less rendered. This project took too long to complete in the coloring stage but it served the story well. My next story will be longer so I will have to adjust the level of detail to fit the workload. Looking back at this layout helps me see where this story could have been better. It pains me to look at it! Stupid layout! Where were you when I was coloring an inferior penciled page!?

Once I have all 4 pages done I'll print them out and make more changes then, I'm sure. Robot Design Color Fun

This drawing has been laying around on my desk for weeks and I finally scanned it in and hit it with some color. It's a part of a larger digital painting that I am still hammering out the composition. The robot probably won't look anything like this in the final painting, but I haven't posted anything for a while and this was a good opportunity. Well back to the coloring, this type of work doesn't pay the bills unfortunately. I'll probably simplify this design down and see if I can't make ready for a t shirt print.

I started doing these quick monster head portraits. I have a few of these. I try to envision their look and design in my head and attack the paper with a pen. No under drawing or anything. The brush tip on the copic marker helps clean up messy line work.

I do my best to try to follow artists I enjoy and blogs and other art based forumesk sites allow me to do that, but most of the work is mainly final pieces and sketches that look nothing like a sketch. Their work is fantastic and I wish I had the ability to just whip out some awesome drawing in a half an hour, call it a sketch and receive comments and internet hits galore. But it ain't gunna happen. Instead I thought why not a breath of fresh air. Why not lower the bar just a little and let those artists out there take in a sigh of relief and post some of my sketches. Nothing fancy, just an actual drawing that took only a few minutes and is as rough as a blast to the gut from a shot gun full of rock salt. I hope I have the above reaction with these future posts. I've seen many a artist get shot down by arm chair comic fans for far more exciting drawings, but the fact is that if this blog even gets looked at, good, bad, or indifferent, it has served it's purpose. So let the experiment begin, and I welcome you to get a taste of some REAL SKETCHES.

Anyone who doesn't know me, doesn't know that I work at fedex office, formerly know as fedex kinkos. Don't ask me why the dropped the "kinkos". I don't know and I don't think Fedex knows either. It offeres me a steady paycheck and the opportunity make these little sketch books out of whatever material I might want to draw on. I started a chipboard sketch book and something about it makes me draw fast and loose and experiment a little more that I normally would. It also takes ink like a dream. So with a copic marker and a juicy pen I have it, and I really enjoy it. It's great for thumbnails and quick stuff. I''l be posting these every couple of days and there are quite a few, some good and some not so.

Looking back at my 1st digital color comp of this painting, I wanted to try to resolve the guy's face a little more. The background is not as developed as I would like at the moment, but the painting as a whole is moving in the right direction. I did so much work with the pencil that I might as well use it to model the guys face. I'm getting anxious to get out the paints and attack, but other project come first at the moment.

Sega Genisis- No, it is not the name of the newly descovered asteroid the size of a gallon of milk! It was the video game system to have if you did NOT want to watch a mustachioed fat itallian bust bricks with his doughy nuckles. And Soldiers of Fortune was one of the best games to ever come out for this system. Great design, music, and fast passed action kept my thumbs busy for days on end. This game is also very difficult. I don't know how many times I had to reach for something/anything to tear apart in an agry rage to prevent myself from giving the Sega the Hulk Hogan Big Leg Drop. I never did get through the whole thing, but this screen shot of the game gives me some great ideas on how to update my website. Those responcible for making this game look as good as it does on a 16 bit system deserve a healthy amount of praise from the people who played it. Thanks!

I drew this in hopes of it helping me relax while working at the computer. Working digitally for most of the day sometimes makes me crave the splendor of a pencil and a blank sheet of paper. This seemed to help satisfy the sketching beast for the moment, but its hunger will not be satiated for long.

Some of you might have seen this image when it was inked. Well, I have tightened up the drawing and tried to solve the readability issue the piece had earlier. I am going to color straight from the pencils as to improve my pencilling skills and allow me to take a break from inking for a little while.
I'm still coloring and I have taken up writing, as of late, to get my story ideas a little room to stretch and take form. More to come...

This is a one day painting illustrating the drowning of a human city and a giant sized Grouper. All in all, I learned a lot about what process I will be taking with my next painting. I lost most of my under drawing as soon as I started painting and it was a rocky start. There are a few elements that were left out because of poor execution and time. Still much to learn.

Early christmas gifts

I passed these marker sketches out at a friend's Christmas party. We all had a great time sharing food, family, gifts and a lot of laughs. They are quick drawings that took an hour each at the most. I am really starting to get into markers and they make great comps for paintings. I probably won't have any new posts until after I get back from Christmas vacation.

Either no one looks at them or the get filed away where they won't be found. And updating a full website for just one sketch is really too much work. I am going to try to draw something I am unfamiliar with for my warmups so I can build my visual vocab and learn something. sculpture design

This a design for a wall mounted sculpture. I was testing out a new brand of vellum a drew this with a sepia colored pencil. I used it as a wam up before trying to draw some sample pages. I worked on it a few minutes every morning and before I new it it was finished. I'm not too happy with the design, but I should be able to nail it after a couple more attempts.

Every time I go back to working on comics I am reminded how difficult they are to draw. You have to be able to draw everything from every angle imaginable and it's very difficult to hide mistakes and general visual ineptitude. I'm glad I started warming up a little before hacking away at the paper. It saves me from digging into my page with an electric eraser for a half hour.

I had a request from a few friends at work for a crazy scottsman and after a long delay here he is. I penciled and inked him as normal, but then I took him into illustrator and live traced and colored him. It's been a while since I've posted anything and I am regretting not looking through my files for scanned sketches earlier. I drew these monster heads a few weeks ago while in a 3 day trip for work. These little guys helped pass the time and they fit nicely with the Holloween theme that happens around this time of year. Tomorrow... more stuff
